Book Reviews

Book Review (Monstrous Affections: An Anthology of Beastly Tales by various authors and they don’t all fit in my title space…)

Hello, Everyone!

My god, that title was tedious to type out… and then I find out that all of those authors won’t fit in my title space, so y’all don’t even get to see my hard work. POOH! So much for hoping I didn’t miss anyone. If you couldn’t tell by the title, this book is a collection of short stories. I listened to the audiobook, and brilliant me forgot to take notes about the different stories. So here we go with a review based off my faulty memory… WEE!!!

Monstrous Affections: An Anthology of Beastly Tales by Kelly Link, Gavin J. Grant, Nik Houser, Alice Sola Kim, Kathleen Jennings, Joshua Lewis, Patrick Ness, G. Carl Purcell, M.T. Anderson, Paolo Bacigalupi, Holly Black, Sarah Rees Brennan, Cassandra Clare, Nalo Hopkinson, Dylan Horrocks, Nathan Ballingrud

Astrid’s Description: Dang, honey, this be interesting.

This is an excellent anthology. The stories contain several classical, current, mythological, and psychological monsters.

My favorites are:
Ten Rules for Being an Intergalactic Smuggler (the Successful Kind)— Holly Black
Quick Hill— M. T. Anderson
This Whole Demoning Thing— Patrick Ness
Wings in the Morning— Sarah Rees Brennan
Son of Abyss—Nik Houser.

I wish that most of the shorts had full length novels to go with them. All of the stories were interesting in their own ways. Plus, each author broke out of the “norms” for this book and made something fantastic. I totally recommend listening or reading it for yourself.

That is all for today.

Be free and keep reading!

Ta, ta.
